OutsideinDC aims to make DC a more bike friendly city, and in turn a more fun, greener, and healthier place to live. OutsideinDC is built entirely on open source software. The underlying framework is Drupal v6, one of the best open source content management system in that world, which runs on PHP5 and MySQL. Mapnik, a C++/Python GIS toolkit, is drawing all the maps and has awesome anti-aliasing rendering. The site is hosted on Apache, and we used SVN to handle all the versioning, including versioning for the mockups, which were done as SVGs in Inkscape, an awesome open source vector program.

Download App “PointAbout” on Apple App store to use)
Description:
PointAbout Alerts is a realtime, location-aware DC alerting tool for the iPhone, which includes crime reports, building permits and more. This data is provided by Washington, DC and we’re making it “location aware,” meaning the crime alerts in your area, for example, show up first.
In fact, we can easily location-enable any RSS or XML feed that contains location data, and turn that into an application on the iPhone, and soon Blackberry, with many other phones coming. If you have an RSS or XML feed you’d like to have behave as a location-aware application, complete with your own custom-branded icon, just let us know!
DC Historic Tours is a slick Google Maps mashup that combines custom walking tour creation with Flickr photo feeds and Wikipedia entries. You can click through now and checkout the preview which will let you create a custom map, save it and reference it later when you’re ready to tour the city.
Live or plan to live in DC? Then iLive.at is for you! Enter a DC address and iLive.at will present you with information tailored to that exact location, cleanly organized into categories. The “Errands” category indicates how far the nearest shopping center, post office and convenience store are, among other things. “Crime” tabulates recently reported offenses in the area, and “The People” displays colorful pie charts giving demographic information. Click on a category and the relevant items will be plotted on a map of your neighborhood. It’s very simple.
Our first version of the application is probably most helpful for those looking for a place in DC. If that’s you, scope the options out on iLive.at before make any decision on where to live “at”! For those already happily settled, iLive.at will continue to mine DC’s data in order to add helpful categories and keep you informed about where you live.

The District of Columbia's Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) which is responsible for DC technology infrastructure and provides a Data Catalog, which provides real-time data from multiple agencies to citizens - a catalyst ensuring agencies operate as more responsive, better performing organizations. Apps for Democracy participants will compete to visualize this data in a manner that is most useful for all.
iStrategyLabs is a digital agency focused on providing clients with interactive strategy, experiential marketing and content creation services. We've created Apps for Democracy to fulfill the DC Government's Office of the Chief Technology Officer's need for visualizing their Data Catalog for the benefit of citizens, visitors and businesses of DC. We hope this model for technology innovation can be adopted by other municipalities in order to strengthen their own technology communities by developing open source solutions for the good of all. Please contact Peter Corbett, CEO, iStrategyLabs with any questions regarding this contest, or to run one in your city.
